The State Government's international award winning program 'New Living' is showing outstanding success in market values.
Housing and Works Minister Tom Stephens said houses sold in Langford, formerly an area which had a high public housing presence, had risen by a massive 9.3 per cent in the December quarter.
"This would be a substantial rise over a year - but in just over three months it is indeed remarkable, reflecting the dramatic changes being made to the area," Mr Stephens said.
"Langford is part of the Department of Housing and Work's $320million New Living program, which is refurbishing public housing areas, selling upgraded houses to tenants and others interested in buying their own homes and decreasing the concentration of public housing to no more than 12 per cent.
"Just before Christmas I helped to demolish the last of the Homeswest apartment blocks in Southgate Road as part of the revitalisation of the suburb.
"Like other New Living areas, Langford is undergoing a total make-over as part of WA's biggest ever urban renewal, but is not alone in its success.
"DHW's upgrading of its properties, whether through the New Living program or other upgrading has no less than five suburbs in the top 10 sellers.
"Koondoola, part of the New North program has also seen a rapid rise in sales as has Lockridge, Redcliffe and St James.
"All these suburbs, which are within easy reach of the city, are providing affordable homes for first home buyers and it pleases me that so many are deciding to take that step.
"At the same time people who live in public housing are getting improved accommodation, a safer environment to live in and a quality lifestyle."
