Lark Hill to become top racing venue
18/05/01
Lark Hill Racetrack in Rockingham is set to become a top midweek racing venue in the near future.
Racing Minister Nick Griffiths said the development of the racetrack had been impressive and the Government recognised Lark Hill's value to the racing industry in both the short and long term.
Mr Griffiths visited the racetrack on Ennis Avenue in Rockingham today with the local Member of Parliament, Norm Malborough MLA. The Minister also met with the President of the Southern Districts Racing Association (SDRA) President Mr Rick Ould and other members of the association committee and representatives of the Rockingham Shire Council.
The SDRA will hold its first race meeting (a picnic-style fixture with approved riders) on October 14. The meeting is expected to generate significant local interest and a large crowd.
The Minister said Lark Hill was a fine example of what could be achieved by voluntary effort but it was now at the stage where it needed support at a State and local government level.
Racing at Rockingham in the future would provide entertainment and enjoyment for local residents and encourage people from all parts of the State to visit the district more often.
"With its superb racing surface and proximity to the beach and natural bush it will attract trainers to make Lark Hill their base," Mr Griffiths said.
He said that midweek racing at Lark Hill would relieve some of the pressure off the city courses at Ascot and Belmont Park.
Currently 30 per cent of WA's trainers use the Lark Hill facilities that was based on the European model.
