New business opportunities and a southern entry to Midland Town Centre will be created when Lloyd Street is extended south from Railway Parade to join Abernethy Road at the Great Eastern Highway Bypass.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said she had approved planning measures which would protect the proposed extension, to be jointly developed by the Midland Redevelopment Authority and the City of Swan.
Ms MacTiernan said she had declared a Planning Control Area over the route to enable the Western Australian Planning Commission to purchase land required for the project.
"This project links Midland directly with Kewdale and the Forrestfield transport hub and will create a 7km link to Perth International airport, creating new opportunities for attracting business investment," she said.
"The redevelopment authority will build roadworks to link Lloyd Street with a commercial business park proposed for the Railway Workshop site and the new Police Communications Centre.
"City of Swan will complete the extension of Lloyd Street to the bypass, including a bridge over the Helena River.
"This project has strong support from the Swan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which is also keen to build Midland's role as a regional business centre."
Ms MacTiernan said that all environmental and indigenous issue approval processes would be completed before the project was commenced.
