Twelve Western Australian projects have been rewarded for helping to tackle violence and crime in local communities.
The 2003 Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Awards are designed to reward and encourage best practice in the prevention or reduction of violence and crime throughout Australia.
Premier Geoff Gallop today presented the WA winners, who were officially announced in Canberra on October 14 with their cheques and certificates.
The WA projects took out awards worth between $2,000 and $10,000, as well as several certificates of merit.
Dr Gallop said the winning projects addressed issues such as crime within public housing areas, anti-social behaviour among at-risk indigenous people and youth and the effect of domestic violence on children.
"The significance of these projects is that they highlight community members are capable of using simple and innovative initiatives to help reduce crime and violence in their own communities," Dr Gallop said.
"In addition, they have shown that there are many opportunities for the community, local government and government agencies to work together in partnership to create safer communities."
This year, 36 projects from around Australia shared in more than $130,000 and 22 projects received Certificates of Merit.
