Local community grants available for 175th Anniversary celebrations

Local community groups will have another opportunity to be part of Western Australia's 175th Anniversary, thanks to a new $300,000 grants scheme announced by the State Government today.
Community groups and local governments can now apply for grants in three funding categories: general celebratory events, environmental works and local heritage conservation.
Premier Geoff Gallop said the new grants were geared towards encouraging small scale, community-driven projects marking the anniversary, particularly in regional WA.
"The new round of grants is about ensuring all Western Australians have the opportunity to become involved in the celebrations - as well as investing in anniversary projects which deliver longer-term benefits for local communities," Dr Gallop said.
"Potential projects which could be funded under the grant scheme include local heritage days, focussed on community heritage works, community organised environmental clean-ups or more general cultural events.
"The grants are also available for conserving the significant places and stories of WA's indigenous culture - which has an important role in commemorating the 175th Anniversary."
A total of $100,000 in funding is available to each category - with grants awarded from $500 to $5,000 for local community organisations.
The grant scheme follows a range of other State Government sponsored projects to commemorate the 175th Anniversary, including this year's 'WA on the Show' exhibition, 175th Anniversary Song Contest and the WA Icons Project.
