Perth Wildcats co-owner and international basketball star Luc Longley will be the new chairman of the Western Australian Health Promotion Foundation (Healthway).
Premier Geoff Gallop said Mr Longley's three-year appointment as chairman would help raise the profile of Healthway.
"Luc is a high-profile role model who can influence many young and sports-minded Western Australians to become healthier," Dr Gallop said.
"His management of the Perth Wildcats with co-owner Andrew Vlahov over the past four seasons has seen the club turn around its financial position.
"It's that shrewd financial management and his obvious team-oriented approach that we can draw upon and use to push further the important message of leading a healthy lifestyle."
Healthway receives some $16million annually to provide grants to health and research organisations and sponsorships to sport, arts, racing and community groups which encourage health programs and improved lifestyle.
Mr Longley represented Australia at three Olympic Games (1988, 1992, 2000) and one World Championship (1990), was the first Australian to play in the prestigious National Basketball Association (NBA) competition in the United States after being drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1991 and won three NBA Championships (1996, 1997, 1998) with the Chicago Bulls.
He was at the Australian Institute of Sport from 1986 to 1987 and has been named one of the institute's 21 top athletes.
