Works to upgrade the Middle Swan Road traffic bridge will start before Christmas, Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan announced today.
Ms MacTiernan said the $1.52million refurbishment works would extend the life of the bridge, which was due to be replaced as part of the future works to duplicate Reid Highway between Beechboro Road and Great Northern Highway.
"The bridge provides an important link between Reid Highway, Roe Highway and the Great Northern Highway," she said.
"Works will include some sub-structure repairs and anti-fungicide treatment, as well as a new guardrail and new concrete overlay on the deck.
"New approach slabs will also be installed, as the existing concrete deck overlay has reached the end of its economic life.
"The bridge was last overlaid in 1985 and the approaches have settled, causing vehicles to impact heavily on the bridge structure.
"The new overlay, in addition to substructure repairs and preventative maintenance works, will help keep the bridge in good condition and provide a sound driving surface into the future."
The refurbishing works will be jointly funded by the State Government, the City of Swan and the Federal roads to recovery program.
The City of Swan currently undertakes routine maintenance of the bridge approaches; however, Main Roads will be undertaking the repairs and timber treatment refurbishment works on the council's behalf.
