Massive new Kwinana shed benefits Fremantle Port and WA farmers
7/8/03
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan today opened a massive, one-hectare fertiliser shed at Fremantle Ports' Kwinana Bulk Jetty facility.
Ms MacTiernan said the $11million project, which would store up to 80,000 cubic metres of fertiliser, was a joint initiative of Fremantle Ports and United Farmers Co-operative.
"This new facility will make full use of Fremantle Ports' new unloader and conveyor system and strengthen the Port's bulk handling operations," she said.
"It will also produce important efficiency savings for United Farmers and its customers.
"The fertiliser will be transferred directly from the ship to the storage shed, which has been designed to enable easy blending of fertilisers and to minimise the turn-around time for trucks.
"Previously it was transferred from the ship to a storage and blending facility by road and then by road again for delivery to customers.
"Significant new facilities such as this demonstrate the wisdom of Fremantle Port's substantial investment in new equipment and technology and could help attract new customers to the Outer Harbour.
"Employment and business in Kwinana and Rockingham will benefit from continued growth of these operations."
The Minister also praised United Farmers and Fremantle Ports for their commitment to protecting the environment by introducing strict dust and run-off controls in the construction of the fertiliser storage shed.
