Merredin railway houses receive heritage support
11/12/03
A group of railway houses in Merredin has been recognised for its significance to the town's history and development.
Heritage Minister Tom Stephens said the precinct, situated on Todd Street and Kitchener Road, had been interim listed in the State Register of Heritage Places, with the support of the Shire of Merredin.
"The railway workers who lived in these houses played an important part in the life of the town and the growth of surrounding areas," Mr Stephens said.
"Merredin developed as a major junction for branch lines serving a vast agricultural area and the Eastern Goldfields railway line which linked to nationally important trans Australian services.
"The historic precinct, which includes 23 dwellings of various materials, built between 1913 and 1950, is an important example of railway housing provided for waged employees at different periods of the 20th century.
"It creates a distinct cultural environment of high heritage value and a visual reminder of the significance of railways to Western Australia.
"The support of the shire and the State Government will help ensure that this precinct will be protected."
Owners and stakeholders are invited to provide comment on the assessment documentation until January 9, 2004.
