Milestone achieved for Bunbury's Back Beach
27/05/05
The $5.8million enhancement of Bunbury's Back Beach will provide a new focus for investment and tourism in the city, according to Tourism and South-West Minister Mark McGowan.
Visiting Bunbury today, Mr McGowan presented the city with a progress payment for the Back Beach to Bunbury Mayor David Smith.
The Minister presented a cheque for $1.752million, from a total of $7million committed by the Gallop Government towards improving Bunbury beaches.
"The work is progressing well and is due to be finished by August," Mr McGowan said.
"It will make the city a more attractive destination for tourists and it will help attract more investment in the city's hospitality industry.
"The work is transforming Bunbury's Back Beach into a more accessible and attractive recreation area and with traffic calming it will improve its amenity for walking and cycling.
"It is expected that once complete, the Back Beach area will attract more tourists to Bunbury, which in turn will create more jobs and opportunities for local residents."
Mr McGowan said the work would both beautify and help protect onshore recreation facilities through construction of the sea wall.
Work at the Back Beach follows earlier work funded by the Gallop Government for the $1.2million Rocky Point beautification in June 2003.
