Minister announces major funding boost for Esperance-based drug program

Teen Challenge has received $180,000 from the State Government to expand its youth rehabilitation program at Grace Academy in Esperance.
Health Minister Bob Kucera presented a cheque to Teen Challenge executives at the opening of two new accommodation wings at Grace Academy today.
Mr Kucera said the Government was proud to provide a substantial one-off financial contribution to an agency that helped young people with alcohol and drug problems.
The funding should also assist the organisation's goal to become self-sufficient.
Teen Challenge supports people between the age of 16 and 30 who require residential support for up to 12 months.
"The Teen Challenge program is dedicated to healing the whole person and this requires nurturing, guidance, spiritual fulfilment and, of course, love," the Minister said.
"The Government recognises the important work they do in helping young people deal with a drug or alcohol problem and move on with their lives."
Teen Challenge is a Christian-based organisation that has offered programs in Perth since 1985 and worldwide since 1958.
The agency operates a youth alcohol and drug residential facility in Esperance and has a training facility in Perth.
Mr Kucera said that last year's historic Community Drug Summit identified young people as a priority group requiring special attention.
"The Drug Summit recognised that there are inadequate supports available to youth with drug-related problems," he said.
"The Government, through the new Drug and Alcohol Office, has committed funds to implement Drug Summit recommendations relating to youth.
"These include the allocation of $750,000 for a youth detoxification and respite centre, which should be fully operational in September, as well as $150,000 to increase the capacity of Youth Supported Accommodation Services to respond to the needs of young clients affected by drug and alcohol problems."
The two new accommodation wings opened today will increase Grace Academy's capacity from 35 to 50 beds.
Mr Kucera praised Terry and Deanne Bailey who, together with their sons Alec and Scott, recently donated $200,000 towards the construction of the new accommodation.
He said it was an enormous contribution that would help many young people deal with their problems in a safe, caring environment.
