Construction on a new $1million community health facility in Leonora will begin within six months, Health Minister Bob Kucera announced in State Parliament today.
Mr Kucera said the new facility would be centrally located and incorporate the local doctor's surgery, Home and Community Care (HACC) and community health services.
"People will be able to access a range of health services from the main street of town, rather than travelling two kilometres to the hospital as they currently do," he said.
"Many of the people who need health services the most are the ones who are least mobile, which is why it is so important that primary health services are easily accessible."
Mr Kucera said the new facility would replace the original Leonora Community Health Centre, which was vacated a number of years ago due to its poor structural condition.
"Following the relocation of community health services to the hospital, the local community was surveyed on where they wanted their primary health services to be located and the result was clear," he said.
"People want to have their doctor and other important primary health services located close to where they live and in an easily accessible location.
"I am pleased to say that the community's voice has been heard loud and clear."
Member for Eyre John Bowler said a project control group with representatives from the local community would be established to oversee the planning and design of the new centre.
"It is vital that local residents have a say in how their health services are delivered," Mr Bowler said.
"This is a great opportunity for the people of Leonora to participate in a development which will serve the community for generations to come."
The new community health centre should be up and running by the middle of next year.
