Minister announces trial of single-sex classes
8/6/05
For the first time in Western Australia, the Gallop Government will commence trials of same-sex classes in five public high schools, starting next year.
Education and Training Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich today announced the schools would begin a three-year, $1.2million pilot program with students in Years Eight, Nine and Ten.
"We want to examine the possible benefits of separate classes for girls and boys," Ms Ravlich said.
"It may be that single-sex classes allow students to concentrate more on their school work and less on trying to impress each other."
Throughout the trial, the Academic Council of the Professional Learning Institute will evaluate the students' academic performance and behaviour in each of the schools, to see if there have been any improvements.
"Same-sex classes are available in co-ed private schools; it is time we looked at giving public school students the same option," the Minister said.
"The Gallop Government's goal is to give parents and schools more choices.
"This project builds on the Gallop Government's commitment to improve the quality of services to all Western Australians, wherever they live."
Studies in the UK and Australia suggest same-sex classes have resulted in a dramatic drop in suspensions, better social interaction between students and improved verbal skills, because all boys' and girls' voices are heard.
An American study also found boys wanted to stay in same-sex literature classes where the books they read better suited their interests, while girls found they learnt more because the classroom was less disruptive.
"It is now widely recognised that boys and girls learn at different rates," Ms Ravlich said.
"We are now inviting high schools to register their interest in taking part in the trial.
"We also want to know what parents think about the idea and encourage them to talk to the teachers and principals at their children's schools."
Schools will soon receive an information package containing registration forms to take part in the trials.
