The Great Southern town of Kojonup has beaten a strong field of regional finalists to be named the State Winner of the Tidy Towns Awards 2004.
Announcing the nine regional winners of this year's awards at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre, Environment Minister Judy Edwards said Kojonup had displayed outstanding achievements in all categories of the awards.
"Kojonup has been able to promote strong community involvement amongst a broad range of people and this has contributed to the town's win," Dr Edwards said.
"The Tidy Towns Committee said it had a clear, long-term vision for the town and kept the community involved through regular meetings, annual celebrations and articles in the local press.
Other regional winners were:
- Hopetoun in the Goldfields-Esperance region;
- Looma in the Kimberley region;
- Pannawonica in the Pilbara region;
- Boddington in the Peel region;
- Collie in the South-West region;
- Exmouth in the Gascoyne region;
- Dongara in the Mid-West region and
- Wickepin in the Wheatbelt region.
"Tidy Towns is one of the Government's most effective programs for helping rural Western Australians enhance and conserve their built and natural environments," she said.
"After 35 years the program has evolved. It now addressed not only litter prevention, but the need to develop overall solutions for regional communities.
"A Tidy Town is one that protects and enhances its natural and cultural heritage, actively engages youth, develops environmental innovations and cultivates a sense of community."
Tidy Towns started in 1969 and now involves up to 15,000 volunteers from regional communities across WA. There are 90,000 people throughout Australia who come together every year on projects to promote sustainable living in rural areas.
