Minister for the Kimberley Tom Stephens congratulated the Kija women and Sister Veronica Ryan on their successful partnership with the recently released book 'From Digging Sticks to Writing Sticks'.
Speaking at the book's launch at the Ngalangangpum School, Warmun (Turkey Creek), the Minister said the book provided a rare insight into the history and way of life for the courageous women of Warmun in the north-west of Western Australia.
As told by the Kija women, the narrative focuses on traditional life, contact with non-Aboriginal settlers, survival, the challenge of station life, the formation of the Warmun community and the establishment of the Ngalangangpum School.
"The book is a valuable and timely resource for all people and highlights the diversity and richness of the Aboriginal culture," Mr Stephens said.
"It will help people understand the significance and importance of the history and tradition of Aboriginal people to this State's heritage."
Mr Stephens said the book also included colourful illustrations and would be treasured by those who read it.
'From Digging Sticks to Writing Sticks' can be obtained from the Catholic Education Office, Broome on 9191 3600 or Perth 9212 9212.
