Minister clarifies Government position on 'pokies'
20/6/01
The Government's position on the introduction of 'pokie' machines was today clarified once again in Parliament by Racing and Gaming Minister Nick Griffiths.
In response to a Parliamentary question from the Hon Barry House MLC in the Legislative Council today, Mr Griffiths said the Government had no intention of introducing gaming machines into pubs and clubs.
"Our position is clear and simple," he said.
"The State Government will not allow the introduction of gaming machines into pubs and clubs in Western Australia.
"It was Labor Party policy before the election to oppose the introduction of gaming machines into pubs and clubs and it remains the policy of the Government.
"No reliable source will say otherwise and the interested individuals and groups have been informed of the Government's position on several occasions.
"The role of lobby groups is to put forward their views and while taking those views into account, the Government has remained firm in its commitment to oppose the proliferation of gaming machines into the community."
