Education and Training Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich today awarded two Western Australian's scholarships to study at a Japanese university for up to a year.
"This is the opportunity of a lifetime for both young men," Ms Ravlich said.
The winners are Darren Harlock, from Willetton, who is in his fourth year of a combined Bachelor of Arts degree at Murdoch University and Daniel Boland, from Floreat, who is in his second year of a combined Bachelor of Arts and Engineering degree at the University of Western Australia.
Both men will receive a return airfare to Japan and up to $50,000 to cover their expenses while they study.
"This year, 10 WA students applied for these prestigious scholarships. They were all rigorously tested for their ability to read, write and speak Japanese.
"The judging panel was unanimous in choosing Daniel and Darren as the winners, to both of them I say 'omedetou'*," the Minister said.
"These young men will be wonderful ambassadors for WA while they study in Japan.
"When they return home they will no doubt be singing the praises of their fantastic educational and cultural experience."
During his time in Japan, Darren Harlock will study at Seikei University in Tokyo, focusing on Japanese intensive language and the country's culture and history.
Daniel Boland plans to immerse himself in Japanese culture by living in a home-stay while studying at Himeji Dokkyo University in the Hyogo Prefecture.
"The Hyogo Prefecture Scholarship was introduced in 1981 and recognises and strengthens the Sister State relationship WA has with the Prefecture.
The Gallop Government is committed to delivering a world-class education to all Western Australians.
