Aboriginal Western Australians researching their family history will be greatly assisted by a new guide to records held in the Battye Library.
Culture and Arts Minister Sheila McHale today launched Katitjin: A Guide to Indigenous Records in the Battye Library.
Katitjin is a Noongar word meaning to learn or to understand.
"The guide provides overviews of the Battye Library's collections, research aids and sections on family history," Ms McHale said.
"Katitjin also includes a researchers' kit comprising useful contacts, publications and websites, a bibliography and search strategies.
"By remembering the past through projects such as Katitjin, we can build stronger communities in the future."
The Friends of Battye Library funded the production of Katitjin, through a generous bequest from the late Maude Sholl.
"The guide will be a valuable resource not only for the general public, but also for the staff of the Battye Library," Ms McHale said.
It is available on the State Library's website http://www.liswa.wa.gov.au under the What's New section.
