A unique property development launched today has earned endorsement by the Year of the Built Environment for its holistic approach to community development.
Perth's newest northern suburbs community, Somerly, is a $400million joint venture between the State Government's Landstart and award winning property developer, Urban Pacific Ltd.
Housing and Works Minister Nick Griffiths, who officially launched Somerly, said that not only did it involve the development of residential and commercial properties, parklands and other public open spaces, but the subdivision also included comprehensive social and economic development programs.
Mr Griffiths said the Year of the Built Environment's main objective was to encourage Australians to celebrate and understand how progress had improved quality of life.
"Somerly is a tangible illustration of how a joint venture between the State Government and the private sector can create sustainable communities where singles, young couples and families can enjoy a better lifestyle with high standards of amenities," he said.
"Somerly property is already in high demand and attracting buyers of all ages and from all areas. I expect demand to increase as the opening of the new Clarkson transit station in September draws nearer and as the Somerly town centre takes shape."
Somerly will ultimately have almost 2,000 homes and more than 5,400 residents.
Mr Griffiths said the Department of Housing and Works was a major builder, home financier and land developer in Western Australia, with assets worth more than $5billion.
He said Landstart had won a number of industry awards for its projects and had proved to be a leader in the field.
"We are proud to be partnering another award-winner in Urban Pacific Limited and we are extremely confident of the standard and style being developed at Somerly," the Minister said.
The official launch of Somerly was marked by a community celebration featuring free family activities including live entertainment, pony rides, face painting, radio-controlled boats and farm animals.
As well as Somerly, Landstart currently has joint ventures in Ellenbrook, Dalyellup, Wandina (Geraldton), Albany, Beeliar, Wellard, Quinns and Brighton.
