Minister lifts water restrictions at Varley
29/4/03
Water restrictions have been lifted at Varley, following pre-winter rainfall which has replenished supplies in the dam supplying the Great Southern town.
Government Enterprises Minister Nick Griffiths has congratulated the Varley community for their water efficiency efforts during what he described as one of the most severe droughts on record.
Varley has been on two days a week sprinkler restrictions since December 2000.
"The Water Corporation decided last year to improve the dam and increase its capacity from 8,000 cubic metres to 12,000 cubic metres," Mr Griffiths said.
"That work was completed last August.
"The bonus is that good rainfall has come early this year allowing restrictions to be lifted sooner than anticipated. I know residents will continue to use water wisely and I hope the town receives further rain during winter."
Mr Griffiths said while much-needed rain had been recorded in and around Borden and Lake King, which were the other two Great Southern towns currently on two-day per week sprinkler arrangements, more rain was needed before restrictions could be lifted.
He said the Water Corporation would closely monitor levels in all the Great Southern public water supply dams through the next few months.
