Housing and Works Minister Tom Stephens today praised local building standards when he opened a new Homeswest complex at Broome's Cable Beach sub-division.
Mr Stephens said the Taiji Drive complex of 12 units for families and seniors was a credit to construction workers and the Department of Housing and Works.
The buildings added ambience to the neighbourhood by conforming to Broome style and were also built to withstand cyclonic conditions.
"The new residents are quite obviously proud of their new homes, and I am confident the complex will be kept to a high standard," Mr Stephens said.
"It is pleasing that the department continues to build on its experience to meet designs that ensure the safety and comfort of tenants.
"In particular, purpose-built accommodation for seniors better meets their lifecycle changes with such alterations as smaller grounds, grip rails and the absence of steps."
Mr Stephens said the new tenants were all long-term North-West residents.
Family homes previously occupied by seniors moving into the new complex were freed up for more family accommodation in the town.
The $1.57million building project had stimulated Broome's local construction industry.
The six two-bedroom seniors' units and six three-bedroom family units were designed by Joseph D'Agostino and Stuart Luff Architects.
Jaxon Construction built the complex for the Department of Housing and Works on a 4,801m site at 2, Taiji Drive.
