Ellenbrook's latest residential estate, Charlotte's Vineyard, was today officially opened by Housing and Works Minister Nick Griffiths.
The Charlotte's Vineyard subdivision was named after Charlotte Davis, believed to be the first European of her gender to set foot in the Swan River colony in 1929.
Charlotte Davis sailed to the shores of Western Australia with Captain James Stirling in the transport ship 'Parmelia' and was a two-year-old when a sailor carried her ashore and set her down on what was an uninviting landscape.
Located 30 minutes from Perth, Charlotte's Vineyard is the seventh residential village to be released in the Ellenbrook estate and reflects the cultural heritage of the Swan Valley and its historic centre, Guildford.
A joint venture between the Department of Housing and Works and a private syndicate, Ellenbrook is regarded as the fastest growing and most awarded new urban community development in WA.
The Ellenbrook joint venture land holding covers more than 1,200ha. The estimated total population of 30,000 residents at completion would occupy more than 10,000 dwellings.
The first subdivision in Charlotte's Vineyard was completed in May, 2003. When fully developed, it will accommodate 1,500 homes, a primary school, village centre and sports fields.
Mr Griffiths said the seven distinct villages which made up the Ellenbrook estate had their own style, character and community spirit.
"The villages will be connected to a town centre with central retail, commercial, educational, cultural and community facilities," he said.
"The environmental focus is the key to the concept. Waterwise gardens, solar panels and 'green-smart' dwellings feature prominently."
Mr Griffiths said the streetscapes and building covenants of Charlotte's Vineyard took their visual cues from the colonial architectural style of Guildford.
Development at Ellenbrook estate was expected to continue until the year 2020.
