Minister praises Maritime Union for sponsorship support
20/7/03
Sport and Recreation Minister Bob Kucera today congratulated the Maritime Union of Australia for its sponsorship of this year's Whalebone Classic Longboard event.
Mr Kucera, who spoke at the opening of the annual event at Cottesloe Beach this morning, said the union had provided sponsorship support to highlight the importance of shipping safety in keeping oceans and beaches free from debris and pollutants.
"With the high number of ships that use the waterways off our coast, keeping our beaches and oceans free from rubbish and oils is essential to our environment and our enjoyment of the coast," the Minister said.
"By sponsoring this event, the Maritime Union is highlighting just how important shipping safety is to the health and amenity of swimmers and surfers.
"Surfing is one of the most popular sports in Australia and it clearly could not be enjoyed by as many people if our beaches were polluted."
Mr Kucera said the Longboard event provided competition for recreational surfers of both genders ranging in age from six to 65.
"The Whalebone Classic is now in its sixth year and has become one of the most popular surfing events in WA," he said.
"I congratulate the organisers and sponsors like the Maritime Union for promoting an event which has such wide appeal."
The Minister said the Gallop Government was encouraging greater levels of physical activity to create a healthier community.
