Minister retains Kings Park as the 'people's park'
29/6/04
Environment Minister Judy Edwards gave a firm commitment today that a Labor Government would not introduce paid parking at Kings Park and Botanic Garden.
"Kings Park has always been free for Western Australians and international visitors to enjoy," Dr Edwards said.
"We want to keep its status as the 'people's park' for the five million people that come here annually."
The Minister removed a proposal to introduce paid parking from the draft management plan, which went out to public consultation last year.
She launched the final document today on behalf of the Botanic Parks and Gardens Authority.
The five-year management plan also includes:
- a world class research facility for plant conservation and education in horticulture;
- significant conservation works to conserve Kings Park's bushland;
- improved visitor services and parkland exhibits;
- development of a new retail outlet; and
- refurbishment of the Lotterywest family area at Hale Oval.
"It maintains its status as a world renowned centre for scientific and conservation research and last year won gold medals from the Western Australian garden display at the Pacific Flora 2004 horticultural show in Japan.
"Public parks are an important part of our history, culture, conservation and biodiversity. To introduce paid parking at Kings Park would only detract from its special icon status."
