Minister says every day in Dowerin is a Field Day
16/8/01
Tom Stephens, the Minister responsible for the Centenary of Federation, today announced the launch of the Dowerin Town Square project and congratulated everyone involved with the project.
"The Dowerin Town Square provides a unique town with a unique focal point - an attractive place where the community can gather and enjoy a wide range of activities," Mr Stephens said.
"It is Dowerin's showcase - fittingly launched to coincide with the Dowerin Field Day, an event which has become known throughout Australia as the premier forum of agriculture and related industries."
The Shire of Dowerin received a $18,940 grant from the WA 2001 Community Centenary Project towards the construction of the Town Square.
The Town Square will incorporate a grassy rest area, attractive seating, a shaded arbor, as well as lighting and banner poles.
The jewel in the Town Square's crown is a unique new sundial. Designed in the form of a stem of wheat, markings surrounding the sundial contain important dates leading up to Federation and the settlement of the Dowerin district.
"The launch of this project demonstrates again Dowerin's vitality and great sense of community," Mr Stephens said.
"Whilst many small rural towns are struggling to survive, Dowerin maintains a real sense of purpose, amply demonstrated by the justly renowned Dowerin Field Days, and now by the Dowerin Town Square."
The Dowerin Town Square is a Centenary of Federation project partly funded by a grant from the WA 2001 Community Centenary Project. Two hundred and one communities throughout the State have shared $3.5 million, committed by the State Government to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Federation.
