Local Government and Regional Development Minister Tom Stephens today congratulated the South Perth community for giving itself a fresh start in the local government elections to create a new South Perth City Council.
"The electors clearly expressed their desire to restore the reputation of their local government," Mr Stephens said.
"This demonstrates the great value of the democratic process when decisive action was needed to renew good government."
Mr Stephens said he was particularly impressed by the wide range and calibre of people who had registered as candidates for the election.
"The elections have created the opportunity for the South Perth community to be re-vitalised, and the candidates should be commended for their willingness to step forward and commit themselves to restoring the social and economic fabric of the community," he said.
"I look forward to the new council working toward re-establishing business and community confidence in the city.
"The dismissal of the former City of South Perth Council was a decision that was not taken lightly and there have been many lessons to be learnt from this experience.
"However, the new council must move forward and take charge of the many challenges they face ahead and I wish them well in their important new roles.
"The State Government will make every effort to continue to provide advice and support to the council through the Department of Local Government and Regional Development to help it provide good government which the community rightfully expects.
"I would also express my appreciation to South Perth commissioners Julian Donaldson, Steve Smith and Eric Lumsden and acting chief executive officer Cliff Frewing, for their effective management and guidance of the city over the past two years."
