Mirrabooka's retail, transport and nearby residential areas will be rejuvenated as part of a State Government push to improve the economic viability of local town centres.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the State Government had committed $3million towards the City of Stirling's Masterplan for the area.
Ms MacTiernan said the project would realise the full potential of the area by creating a vibrant hub with lifestyle, action, entertainment and jobs.
"The Mirrabooka Regional Centre is a successful shopping centre in its own right," she said.
"However, there are concerns over the quality of the public spaces in the area, security issues and poor integration of public transport.
"These factors have prompted the State Government to join with the City of Stirling in giving the area a much-needed makeover."
The Master Plan for the Mirrabooka Town Centre includes:
- a new bus transit square that integrates well with the surrounding land uses;
- approximately 300m of main street-based lifestyle retail development;
- a new modern cinema complex;
- 120-150 town centre residential lots;
- 12,500sq.m of showroom/ commercial floor space;
- 7,200sq.m of new retail space;
- a 1,600sq.m community square; and
- a new bus interchange facility.
"The facility itself will be more attractive, provide better security and will be a key part of a pedestrian-friendly environment."
Local MLAs John Kobelke, Margaret Quirk and Bob Kucera welcomed the plans and said the local community would benefit greatly from the rejuvenation.
Mr Kobelke said he and Girrawheen MLA Margaret Quirk had been briefed by the City of Stirling a number of times, discussed the plans and lobbied the State Government for funds to support the proposal.
Mrs Quirk said the Gallop Government's strong economic management over the past four years had allowed it to invest in local communities.
"The people of Mirrabooka, Girrawheen and surrounding areas have put up with second-class facilities for long enough," she said.
"I have fought long and hard to get a fair deal for this area and I am delighted that the Gallop Government has come to the party."
Yokine MLA Bob Kucera said the project would be a shot in the arm for Mirrabooka and surrounding areas.
"This project will totally transform the town centre and give local residents something to be proud of," Mr Kucera said.
Ms MacTiernan said the project would be a collaboration between the City of Stirling, the Public Transport Authority and the Department for Planning and Infrastructure.
The design of the revitalised centre would be an excellent example of 'transit-oriented development'.
"Transit-oriented development is about reducing the community dependence on the car by creating vibrant, livable and walkable communities with high quality public transport systems as centres," the Minister said.
"Going by global trends it will become an integral part of urban design in Perth."
