Australia's first comprehensive, mobile medical service for at-risk people has received a $90,000 funding boost.
The pilot program, Street Doctor, has operated in central Perth since June, 2001.
It had six months' initial funding as a result of a partnership between the Innovative Health Services for Homeless Youth (IHSHY) program and the Mental Health Division of the Western Australian Department of Health.
Health Minister Bob Kucera said today the success of the pilot program would see $90,000 made available to ensure its continuation until June.
The money forms part of $394,000 in joint Commonwealth-State recurrent funding for IHSHY programs across WA.
"The Street Doctor program offers free, confidential health care to street-based people, encompassing everything from minor wound dressings and vaccinations to health screening and counselling," Mr Kucera said.
The specially-fitted Street Doctor van is staffed by a GP, nurse and outreach worker. It is parked in the concourse of the WA Museum every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evening from 6.30pm.
Mr Kucera said there were approximately 12,000 homeless people in Western Australia - many of whom live in the metropolitan area.
"Research has shown that the homeless not only have a greater than normal incidence of medical problems, but also they are reluctant to access existing health services," he said.
"It is vital to provide an appropriate alternative for homeless and other at-risk populations.
"Not only should Street Doctor help produce better health outcomes, it will also benefit the health system by providing an alternative to non-urgent emergency department presentations and reduce episodes of hospitalisation for a highly at-risk and marginalised group."
Mr Kucera said the services, where possible, aimed to link their clients with mainstream health services.
