More accommodation in western suburbs for people with disabilities
3/6/04
Ten units specially built for people with intellectual and physical disabilities have been opened in Shenton Park.
The Governor of Western Australia, His Excellency Lieutenant General John Sanderson, opened the Dr Dick Porter units today, at a celebration to mark the 25th anniversary of the Florence Hummerston Village.
Housing and Works Minister Nick Griffiths said the units were a fine example of providing homes in the western suburbs for those who needed to access medical facilities such as Shenton Park Rehabilitation Unit.
"This project was a joint initiative between the State Government and the not-for-profit Westcare Incorporated and is a good example of how the Department of Housing and Works can stretch the housing dollar further," Mr Griffiths said.
"The department's work with many charitable bodies such as Westcare and local authorities to provide special need housing has a proven track record.
"Already, the first stage of this joint venture in which Westcare upgraded their facilities has proved extremely successful."
Mr Griffiths said the initial 10 one-bedroom units, that opened in 2002, had resulted in the turnover at the complex dropping to almost zero.
"Residents in the older accommodation are now eagerly waiting for a vacancy in these newly completed units," he said.
A third stage is also planned.
