National Youth Week begins this weekend
3/4/02
National Youth Week - from April 7-14 - kicks off this weekend at 11am at the Claisebrook Carnival in East Perth's Victoria Gardens.
The Claisebrook Carnival, conducted annually by the East Perth Rotary Club, has this year seen strong involvement from members of the City of Perth Youth Advisory Council in the planning and staging of the carnival and its many attractions.
During National Youth Week, more than 40 events will be staged around the State - from youth festivals to art exhibitions and dance parties - planned and organised by members of Western Australia's network of Youth Advisory Councils.
Youth Minister Sheila McHale said that the week gives people of all ages the opportunity to acknowledge the valuable contributions that young people make to our community.
"National Youth Week is an opportunity for the community as a whole to recognise young people for their achievements and play a part in breaking down unfair and negative perceptions about them," she said.
"During this special week, young people will be organising and conducting a range of celebratory events designed to demonstrate a positive image of youth to local communities.
"As part of the National Youth Week celebrations, the annual WA Youth Awards Showcase presentation event, held at the Burswood Resort on April 11, recognises and rewards outstanding young Western Australians whose commitment to others may previously had gone unrecognised.
"The Art Gallery of Western Australia's contribution to the week will be the presentation of 'Year 12 Perspectives' - an exhibition of the best of the artworks created by Year 12 students. I would encourage everyone to visit the gallery and see these artworks for themselves."
A list of events and activities being held around the State follows.
