New Bus Service for East Perth
12/12/02
A new Yellow CAT service for people living, working or studying in East Perth and other public transport users starts this Sunday.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the Yellow CAT service would run from the Wellington Street Bus Station, along Wellington Street, Waterloo Crescent, Royal, Lime and Brown Streets, before returning along the same route.
Buses will operate every 10 minutes between 6.50am and 9am on weekdays and then revert to services approximately every 15 minutes until the last service at 6:20pm. Weekend services will operate every 35 minutes between 10am and 6.15pm.
"The Yellow CAT's faster, direct route along Wellington Street will be good news for users travelling in both directions," Ms MacTiernan said.
"It also offers excellent connections with other CAT services and the whole public transport network.
"Weekend services will make it easy for more people to enjoy the wonderful recreational areas, public art works, restaurants and cafes near the restored Claisebrook inlet."
Perth MLA John Hyde said the service would be reviewed in 12 months to ensure it was meeting the needs of potential users.
"Inner city residents have a strong affinity with public transport," Mr Hyde said.
"Recent Transperth research suggested that 96 per cent of surveyed East Perth residents were users of public transport.
"The Central Area Transit service remains incredibly popular, with the Red and Blue CAT services carrying a combined 4.3 million passengers annually."
Evening services will be augmented by a re-routed Transperth Route 95 bus, which has been extended into East Perth for some evening services, and terminates and departs from the corner of Waterloo Crescent and Wittenoom Street, providing convenient access to the city.
This journey falls within the 'Free Transit Zone', so no fare is payable.
