Attorney General Jim McGinty today announced the appointment of highly respected District Court judicial officer Denis John Reynolds as the new President of the Children's Court.
He will take up the position on March 15 for an initial period of two years, replacing Judge Kate O'Brien who will return to the District Court.
Mr McGinty said Denis Reynolds was an experienced and extremely competent judicial officer.
He had served on the District Court as an acting judge (commissioner) for the past seven years.
Prior to that he was a stipendiary magistrate for 13 years, including four years as resident magistrate in Kalgoorlie.
"He is very highly regarded both within the judiciary and the legal profession," Mr McGinty said.
"His calm disposition and no-nonsense approach will equip him well for this difficult and sensitive role.
"The Children's Court plays an extremely important role both in providing appropriate punishment for crimes by young people and also dealing effectively with first offenders who risk becoming entrenched in a criminal lifestyle if not deterred early."
His permanent appointment as a District Court judge would be confirmed on Monday (February 9), and he would take over as Children's Court President five weeks later.
