Health Minister Bob Kucera today launched Western Australia's most comprehensive campaign to reduce amphetamine and ecstasy-related harm in young people.
Over the next six weeks, the 2001-02 Drug Aware Campaign will post advertisements in youth press, on the radio and in the restrooms of entertainment venues to increase knowledge of the health and social consequences of amphetamine and ecstasy use.
A new youth-oriented website has also been launched to provide young people with easy access to reliable drug information, an overview of drug-related issues and professional advice about drugs.
"The levels of illicit drug use in among young people in WA - in particular the recent increase in the use of psycho-stimulant drugs such as amphetamines and ecstasy - continue to be a matter for concern," Mr Kucera said.
"Also troubling is the proportion of young people who continue to have positive expectations about the type of experiences they are likely to have when using these drugs.
"The reality is that it is difficult to predict what a person's reaction to a drug will be - and often it can be harmful, or even deadly."
Mr Kucera said the Drug Aware campaign was targeted at young people aged 14 to 24 and aimed to decrease the attractiveness of drugs.
