You don't have to travel halfway around the world to savour Mediterranean flavours, you simply need to visit Western Australia's Great Southern region.
That is the message behind a new guide released today that aims to increase the profile of the region's premium wines and fine cuisine.
Great Southern Minister Kim Chance said the Great Southern Food and Wine Touring Guide would highlight some of the State's premium varietal wine and fresh quality produce from five dynamic sub-regions.
"Each offers something special - from classic wine varieties to chardonnay and pinot noir; from asparagus and cherries to marron and oysters," Mr Chance said.
"We now have a comprehensive guide for travellers that challenges them to explore the attributes and tastes of this unique region.
"Such exposure will continue to gain recognition for the region's wine and food produce and strengthen its reputation as one of the State's leading tourism destinations."
The Food and Wine Touring Guide is an initiative of the Great Southern Region Marketing Association and the Great Southern Wine Producers' Association.
The project was facilitated through the Great Southern Regional Marketing Network, which represents the wine, food and tourism sector.
The Great Southern Development Commission (GSDC) and the WA Department of Agriculture also provided support.
"The GSDC's Regional Development Scheme funding of $100,000 per annum has been made available to the network over the past three years to co-ordinate such activities, giving the region access to avenues of promotion that would not have been possible for individual organisations," the Minister said.
"The added benefits of a cross-sector approach and the wide range of marketing expertise on the network panel ensure high quality marketing programs and outcomes for the region."
