New High School for Serpentine-Jarrahdale
18/1/05
Education and Training Minister Alan Carpenter has today approved a new non-Government high school for Serpentine-Jarrahdale to be established from the beginning of 2006.
Mr Carpenter said the Serpentine Jarrahdale Grammar School would be located in the current Serpentine-Jarrahdale Shire Offices.
The Minister said there had been strong local support for a new school, including very active lobbying by ALP candidate for Serpentine-Jarrahdale, Daron Smith.
"Daron has been very aware of the call for a local high school, and has worked hard to achieve this result for the Serpentine-Jarrahdale community," Mr Carpenter said.
Mr Smith was delighted that the Minister had brought the community's wishes to reality.
"This is a fantastic result, and I am very proud to have worked with Mr Carpenter to achieve this outcome for the students and parents of Serpentine-Jarrahdale," he said.
The Minister also acknowledged the involvement of Roleystone MLA Martin Whitely, who was a strong and vocal supporter of a new school for the area.
Mr Carpenter said he would been advised that the school planned to open with 64 students in Year Eight, with an extra year group to be added in each subsequent year until it had approximately 384 students in Years Eight to 12 by 2010.
The maximum projected enrolment for the proposed school would be approximately 640 students in Years Eight to 12 by 2020.
