New Supreme Court judge appointed
8/12/04
District Court judge Peter Blaxell has been appointed as a new judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia.
Attorney General Jim McGinty said the establishment of the WA Court of Appeal and WA State Administrative Tribunal had created the need for an additional judge to join the Supreme Court.
"Several existing Supreme Court Judges have joined the new court and tribunal, making it necessary for an additional judge to be appointed to the Supreme Court to avoid disruption to court schedules," Mr McGinty said.
"I am confident that Mr Blaxell will be a valuable addition to the Supreme Court and will ensure the court continues to operate efficiently."
Mr Blaxell was admitted in 1969 and spent time practising as a solicitor in London, before returning to Perth to join Lavan and Walsh as a solicitor and partner.
In the mid-70s he practised in both WA and the Northern Territory in the areas of common and criminal law and was a special magistrate of the Children's Court and referee of the Small Claims Tribunal.
He has served as a judge of the District Court since 1991, during which time he has implemented reforms that have reduced delays in the civil procedures of the court.
"Mr Blaxell's comprehensive experience as Judge of the District Court is highly regarded both within the judiciary and the legal profession and I congratulate him on his appointment," Mr McGinty said.
Mr Blaxell will take up his position on February 1, 2005.
