Nine new seniors' units are to be built as part of the New Living program in Armadale.
Housing and Works Minister Tom Stephens said that he was pleased that tenders had been called for the units to be built for the Department of Housing and Works in Church Avenue.
"There will be seven two bedroom units and two one-bedroom units to cater for the demand in the area from seniors," Mr Stephens said.
"The site has been carefully chosen so that the occupants will have easy access to the shopping centre and all its facilities as well as being near the station and its frequent train services.
"Seniors form a quarter of all Homeswest tenants and many want to move from their larger family homes into the agreeable units that are easier to maintain as they become less active."
"But naturally they want to remain in familiar surroundings among their friends.
"As seniors move into the smaller homes, it gives Homeswest the added advantage of freeing up the bigger homes for families on the waiting list."
Mr Stephens said that the construction work would generate valuable contract work and flow on benefits to local businesses.
Tenders closed on Tuesday March 26.
