Regional communities are being given more help to put their local event on the tourist map.
Regional event development co-ordinator Saskia Doherty has been appointed to the Bunbury-based EventsCorp team to help spread the word about event tourism activities happening in regional areas.
Tourism Minister Bob Kucera said the first-time appointment of a regional event development co-ordinator was a big win for regional WA.
"As a part of the State Government's election commitment to growing regional event tourism, an EventsCorp office was established in Bunbury," Mr Kucera said.
"Since then Chris Tate, EventCorp's regional event development manager, has played a key role in attracting and developing regional events including festivals, and sporting and cultural events.
"He is also responsible for administering the $120,000 Regional Events Scheme to events with the potential to attract significant tourist numbers to the region.
"The regional event development co-ordinator position taken on by Ms Doherty will only serve to enhance and improve the events staged in regional WA."
Mr Kucera met with EventsCorp's Bunbury team during a two-day visit to the South-West last week.
"Events have a huge role to play in boosting regional economies and attracting tourism and ultimately they work to stimulate growth in regional areas," the Minister said.
"Tourism is one of the State's economic drivers, injecting tourist dollars into the local economy and creating valuable new jobs."
Eventscorp executive director Ms Madeleine Bertelli joined the Minister in welcoming Ms Doherty to the EventsCorp team.
"Saskia takes on a brand new position with the EventsCorp team and it's a pleasure to have her on board as regional event development co-ordinator," Ms Bertelli said.
