Emergency Services Minister Michelle Roberts today officially opened the new Port Hedland Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service's Communication Centre.
Mrs Roberts commended the volunteers on their dedication to fundraising more than $300,000 for the development of the new centre.
"So far, volunteers have contributed more than 9,500 hours and their families have donated more than 1,500 hours to building the centre," she said.
"With assistance from local businesses and $40,000 from Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA), this project has been an all round collaborative effort."
Mrs Roberts said the Port Hedland Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service played a vital role in community safety.
"It is a priority for the State Government to ensure all emergency services are properly equipped and resourced to protect and safeguard the community at all times and the Port Hedland volunteers provide a first-rate service," she said.
"Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, they make themselves available to protect life, property and the environment.
"Over the last few years, they have grown in strength and now have a strong membership base.
"This is a reflection of the increasing commitment and dedication of the volunteers and FESA staff in the Pilbara region."
Mrs Roberts also acknowledged the dedication of volunteer Betty Mathews and Captain Joanne Cummings, who both recently received Centenary Medals.
Ms Cummings was awarded her medal for Services to the Community through Fire Prevention Education. Ms Mathews was awarded for her dedication to Fire and Rescue Service and State Emergency Service.
