An innovative playgroup scheme promoting positive interaction between young children and senior citizens was launched today by Seniors' Minister Sheila McHale.
Under the program, funding will be provided to help profit and not-for-profit organisations establish intergenerational playgroups in their local communities.
Ms McHale said grants of up to $2,000 would be made available to playgroups organising regular visits to aged care facilities, retirement villages and through local government and community-based seniors' programs.
The Minister wants to establish 15 to 20 intergenerational playgroups across the State.
"This ground-breaking initiative will promote positive interaction between young people and seniors," she said.
"Both age groups benefit from the scheme - the children develop a greater understanding and appreciation of the older generation and our senior citizens maintain an important social link with the outside world.
"The scheme is part of the Gallop Government's commitment to building stronger, more inclusive communities."
The Intergenerational Playgroups Small Grants Program was developed in partnership with Playgroup WA.
The program builds on the success of Donovan Hostel in Forrestfield, which established Western Australia's first playgroup within an aged care environment in April this year.
The funding is primarily for toys, craft materials and books.
Not-for-profit organisations and local government authorities wanting to upgrade facilities or equipment to accommodate an intergenerational playgroup may apply for funding under the Lotterywest Residential Facilities Enhancement Grant Program.
Playgroup WA will work with successful applicants to ensure individual programs are safe, culturally sensitive and developmentally appropriate to the needs of children, parents and carers.
Phone Colleen Buck at the Office for Seniors Interests and Volunteering on 9220 1114 for an information package or to register for a briefing session - applications close October 31 at 4pm.
Ms McHale launched the scheme at Playgroup WA's North Perth headquarters.
