In a first for Australia, Land Information will form a separate portfolio under the direction of a State Government Minister.
The Department of Land Information (DLI), formerly known as the Department of Land Administration (DOLA), will become a new portfolio for Nick Griffiths MLC, who is also Minister for Housing and Works; Racing and Gaming; and Government Enterprises.
"By creating such a department, the Government has recognised the importance of land Information as a part of the emerging knowledge economy," Mr Griffiths said.
"This decision also reinforces the Government's commitment to transforming DLI into a statutory authority with commercial powers."
Last year, the Government decided DOLA's existing land information, land titling and valuation functions would form a new statutory authority.
At the same time, Cabinet decided to transfer DOLA's Crown Land function to the Department for Planning and Infrastructure to help facilitate more effective planning and management of Government land.
"The change to DOLA's core functions - and its future focus upon providing increased access to Land Information - is more accurately reflected by the name Department of Land Information (DLI)," Mr Griffiths said.
DLI will continue to provide services previously associated with DOLA, including mapping, aerial and satellite photography, land titling and valuation services.
The focus, however, will be on using technology and online services to provide greater access to integrated land and property information.
"Through the new agency, we aim to improve access to land and property information which will have a wide range of benefits for Government and business," the Minister said.

"It will be at the front line of e-government initiatives.
"Streamlining the process is part of our commitment to creating a stronger economy."
Mr Griffiths said the new statutory authority would have the potential to generate revenue which can then be reinvested into new technology, initiatives and opportunities.
The new statutory authority will continue to provide significant Government services, underpinning the State's taxation and property markets.
These services will be safeguarded as the agency seeks to expand its commercial role.
