The State Government has allocated $350,000 towards the construction of a 33m pool at the University of Western Australia, under the Community Sporting Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF).
Sport and Recreation Minister Bob Kucera said the pool would provide a major boost to the health of the local community by simultaneously promoting physical activity, rehabilitation and several aquatic sports.
"The new $1.5million pool will allow the university to teach and conduct research into water polo, triathlon and swimming, while also providing community classes and participation for young people and the elderly," Mr Kucera said.
"It will complement the other two pools at the facility and enhance UWA's ability to provide an intergenerational approach to promoting physical activity.
"The new pool will enable the popular Uniswim program for children learning to swim to expand with demand.
"It will also allow the university to dedicate its other pools to providing much needed hydrotherapy services to the community catering especially to seniors."
Mr Kucera said the pool would also be used extensively throughout the Australian University Games held later this year, which was expected to bring more than 4,500 visitors to the State.
"The project is an excellent example of how relevant sporting infrastructure can increase physical activity," he said.
"This is what the CSRFF is all about."
The Minister also thanked the UWA's School of Human Movement, City of Subiaco and City of Nedlands for their role in the project.
