New scenic recreational path for Maylands
16/11/02
A new 4.5km recreational shared use path will take in some of the most scenic sections of the Maylands Peninsula.
Officially opening the Maylands Foreshore Recreational Path today, Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the $550,000 project had been delivered by a partnership between the City of Bayswater and the State Government.
"The new path is an off-road, continuous facility that benefits cyclists, pedestrians and users with access disabilities," Ms MacTiernan said.
"The State Government's $300,000 contribution comes through its commitment to safe, accessible routes for cyclists across the metropolitan area through the Perth Bicycle Network."
The path crosses Bardon Park, Berringa Park, the Maylands Peninsula Golf Course, Lake Bungana, Lake Brearley, the Maylands Police Academy, Maylands Waterland, Clarkson Reserve and Tranby House, and connects into an existing path system to continue to Bayswater, Ashfield and beyond.
Ms MacTiernan said the Gallop Government had contributed more than $38million to cycling infrastructure throughout the State since coming to office.
"Between the Department for Planning and Infrastructure and Main Roads WA - we have delivered nearly 300km of off-road cycle paths and over 230km of on-road cycle lanes," she said.
"We have also funded other facilities, such as new Head Start facilities, diamond dot markings to enable cyclists to change signals at traffic lights, route signage and end of trip facilities such as lockers, u-rails and shower facilities.
"We are also making a strong commitment to cycling through the 'Cycle Instead' campaign, which encourages people to make short trips by bicycle instead of using their car.
"The campaign promotes the health, environmental and financial benefits of getting out of the car and on to a bike, and positions cycling away from the competitive sports or children's play image, to that of a legitimate means of transport.
"It encourages people to see that riding a bike is not just an enjoyable activity, but also a very convenient and inexpensive way to get around."
