New school for Ellenbrook
11/3/02
A second primary school will be built in Ellenbrook, for the start of the 2004 school year, Education Minister Alan Carpenter announced today.
Mr Carpenter said that due to the continued growth in the Ellenbrook area, north-east of Perth, a new permanent school would be provided to replace the existing Coolamon Primary School, which had been accommodated in offices as an interim measure.
"This is a very exciting move for the local community," he said.
"The growing community will now have its own permanent campus and more autonomy to make decisions for its students."
The Coolamon School - based in offices - opened as an annexe of Ellenbrook Primary School in 2000 with an enrolment of 74.
In 2001, the school in offices became a school in its own right and was reclassified as Coolamon Primary School with an enrolment of 135.
"By 2004, it is predicted the school will have an enrolment of more than 350 kindergarten to Year Seven students," Mr Carpenter said.
A full primary school on a permanent school site will be built including:
- 12 classrooms;
- three Early Childhood Education classrooms;
- a library resource centre, specialist art, craft and music facilities;
- administrative and staff facilities;
- a covered assembly area; and
- a canteen.
"A Project Control Group will be formed to oversee the design process," Mr Carpenter said.
The group will include parent and teacher representatives, the principal, the district director, and representatives from the architects and the Department of Education.
"It's wonderful to see the support of the Ellenbrook community continuing with the development of this school," the Minister said.
"With new permanent facilities, the school will be able to provide educational programs that suit the needs of local students."
