A unique system of roadside warning signs will be used from today to protect emergency service personnel.
All Bush Fire Brigades and Fire and Rescue Service firefighters across the State will be supplied with the new signs.
The triangular design for the signs, which was the brainchild of the Fire and Emergency Services Authority of WA and Jason Signs of Welshpool, will be patented and may soon be in use throughout Australia.
Emergency Services Minister Michelle Roberts said today the decision to make the signs was prompted by firefighters.
"In recent years there have been four firefighters who have lost their lives while undertaking emergency operations on or near roadways," Mrs Roberts said.
"There have also been countless near misses.
"What we are hoping is that the signs, combined with a greater awareness amongst motorists, will result in an end to tragedies like these.

"The signs are highly reflective and pack away for easy storage in cars and trucks.
"Many signs in the past have been cumbersome and difficult to use. With this unique design, they are quick to erect and compact when packed away."
Depending on the speed limit in the area, the signs will be placed between 100 and 220 metres from the emergency vehicles. This will give drivers enough time to slow down and improve the safety for themselves and emergency personnel.
