New southern suburb to be serviced by train
7/5/03
The fast-growing southern corridor is to have a further 2,800 housing lots at Wellard, 35km south of Perth.
Housing and Works Minister Tom Stephens said a joint venture between the Department of Housing and Works and Peet and Company would create a range of housing lots to cater for demand.
"People choosing to live in this area, within easy reach of the Kwinana Industrial Area and the city, would have a choice of lots from 300sq.m to semi-rural 1,500sq.m," Mr Stephens said
"It would also have the added advantage of being serviced by the proposed Mandurah to Perth railway link, with a train station planned within the development and easy access to the Kwinana Freeway."
The Minister last week inspected plans for the new land development, with local Peel MLA Norm Marlborough, who welcomed the exciting opportunity for a new suburban estate to be designed around a commercial heart that, similar to Subiaco, focusses on the new station due to be opened at Wellard in 2006.
"This would mean a major boost in jobs for the area, as businesses are attracted by a vibrant commercial centre," Mr Marlborough said.
"It will also give local young people seeking work, and the elderly, greater mobility by providing easily accessible public transport.
"Included in the development are sites for both public and private schools, a recreation oval and a main street Village Centre, creating all the infrastructure for a modern neighbourhood."
Peet and Company, on behalf of the joint venture, has been negotiating a Memorandum of Understanding with the WA Planning Commission and the WA Railways Commission.
Planning approval was expected by July, and development of the first 148 lots is expected to start before the end of the year.
It is anticipated up to 750 lots would be released between the end of this year and December 2006, when the train station is due to be opened.
