The Koombana Bay groyne is to be developed into a public walkway and jetty ready for the summer boating season, Premier Geoff Gallop announced in Bunbury today.
The State Government and City of Bunbury will both contribute $200,000 towards the project.
"This project will provide Bunbury with a major recreational asset," Dr Gallop said.
"The Koombana Bay groyne has been in a state of serious disrepair since it was damaged by Cyclone Alby in 1978.
"The groyne's redevelopment will enable boat owners to use it to board boats from - for the first time in almost 30 years.
"People will also be able to use the groyne to fish from and for seniors and people with disabilities, it is particularly good news. They will soon be enjoying improved access to Koombana Bay."
The Premier said the groyne's development would add value to Bunbury's waterfront assets and be a boon for tourists and local residents alike.
The works include rebuilding the groyne's structural integrity, adding concrete decking to the top of the groyne and the construction of a 30m steel and jarrah jetty.
Concept designs have been drawn up and the tender to undertake the works is expected to be let by the City of Bunbury in November.
Dr Gallop said although the groyne had been badly damaged by Cyclone Alby, it still served as an effective sand trap and provided protection to swimmers.
