Main Roads will conduct a six-month trial of a 60km/h speed limit on the section of Nicholson Road between High Road and Metcalfe Road, in Langford, beginning in early March.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan also said that a 40km/h School Zone would be established on High Road adjacent to Lynwood Senior High School
Ms MacTiernan said the trial and the school zoning had resulted from reviews which were undertaken as a commitment to the Nicholson Road Action Group.
"The proposed trial will enable Main Roads and the Action Group to assess the real affect a 60km/h speed limit would have on safety issues raised by the group," she said.
"Main Roads had set the 70 km/h speed limit following a technical speed assessment on the residential section of Nicholson Road.
"However, Nicholson Road currently carries more heavy vehicle traffic than similar types of roads because it is linked to the Canning Vale Industrial area.
The level of heavy vehicle traffic will reduce when Roe Highway Stages four and five (Welshpool Road to Nicholson Road) are completed by the end of 2003.
"During the trial, Main Roads will monitor the speed of traffic, liaise with the Police Service in regards to enforcing the trial speed limit and consult with the Nicholson Road Action Group," Ms MacTiernan said.
"At the end of the six months, Main Roads will review the relevant data it has collected and determine whether the 60km/h speed limit is retained or the 70km/h speed limit is reinstated."
Ms MacTiernan also outlined that an inspection of High Road adjacent to Lynwood Senior High School, undertaken to assess school children and traffic activity at the start of the school year, had been completed.
The results of this review saw Main Roads install a 40km/h School Zone last week, with accompanying road markings indicating 40km/h used to reinforce the School Zone message on higher speed roads.
