No name change for Glendalough Station
15/3/04
The name of Glendalough Train Station will remain the same after public opinion was sought on a proposal to change it to Scarborough Beach Road Station.
Acting Planning and Infrastructure Minister Tom Stephens said Transperth would instead take steps to better identify the station's connection with Scarborough Beach.
Mr Stephens said the Department of Land Information's Geographic Names Committee had ruled out the name change.
"Transperth placed advertisements calling for public comment on the proposed name change, late last year," he said.
"Correspondence and public discussion generated during the process demonstrated that community opinion was split.
"Including Scarborough in the name of a station eight kilometres from the beach could also have caused confusion.
"Transperth believes the committee's decision is the best one."
The Acting Minister said Transperth would improve station signage and introduce audio announcements on trains to promote the connection between Glendalough Station and Scarborough Beach Road bus services.
The name change was considered after approaches from Innaloo MLA John Quigley and the Scarborough and Districts Progress Association.
"We believe these improvements will address the concerns raised by Mr Quigley and Scarborough businesses," Mr Stephens said.
"Their actions have also led Transperth to look at other bus and rail stations where connections to popular destinations could be better communicated to passengers."
Perth MLA John Hyde welcomed the outcome.
"I made sure that the Minister and Transperth were aware of the extent of the Glendalough community's support for the existing station name," Mr Hyde said.
"So I am pleased that alternative means will reinforce the Scarborough connections available from Glendalough station."
