Northam to get more family accommodation
10/9/03
The contract for construction of a large energy-efficient family home in Northam has been awarded to a local builder.
Housing and Works Minister Nick Griffiths said the winning tender of $138,715 was submitted by Northam builder S.Hughes.
Mr Griffiths said the single storey, four-bedroom, brick veneer and tile home would be built at lot 10 Throssell Street as part of the Department of Housing and Works' Fund 6 Aboriginal housing program.
"The design has received a four-star energy rating under the new Building Code of Australia rating system," he said.
"To conserve energy and reduce heating and cooling costs, the house has been oriented so that the east and west elevations are well shaded, whereas the northern elevation receives as much winter sun as possible."
Architects for the development are Perth-based Max Buccioletti Architects.
"This is a large house which will provide a welcome addition to the housing stock available to Aboriginal families in Northam," Mr Griffiths said.
"There is strong demand for this type of accommodation in the Northam area and the availablity of four bedrooms means that the house will be suitable for a large family."
Mr Griffiths said the Gallop Government is delivering a fairer deal for all Western Australians by providing reasonable access to secure and affordable housing.
"We are committed to a public housing program which meets the essential needs of the community," the Minister said.
